To be honest, I’m really scared of the sea. I have been so since that happened to my sister. But on Saturday, there was no time to think. I just had to go and help them in whatever way I can,” he said.

Pinoy sales associate in Dubai overcomes self-doubt, becomes ‘last singer standing’

While others would join singing contests to win prizes or start a career, Mark Rodel Sularte Arellano joined one for a different reason — to boost his self-confidence.

After surviving his first karaoke contest in 2010, it was all a walk in the park for the 34-year-old sales associate.

After that first competition, dun na nag-start yung desire [ko] na kumanta sa stage at sumali sa mga contest kasi parang from there, parang bumalik yung tiwala ko sa sarili na puwede rin pala ako manalo ulit,” Mark shared an email, referring to the karaoke contest at the Rockwell Bar in Capitol Hotel-Al Mina, Dubai.

DFA: Pinoys still getting in trouble in UAE, Gulf nations over fake documents

Noting an increase in the number of Filipinos detained in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf Cooperation Council-member countries, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday reiterated its appeal to Filipinos to refrain from submitting fake documents to gain employment.

In an advisory, the DFA also asked Filipinos to have their documents verified by the nearest Philippine embassy or Consulate General, as most Filipinos charged with falsification were unaware that they received fake documents from their relatives in the Philippines.

The DFA did not mention how many Filipinos were recently jailed in the UAE and GCC because of fake documents.

OFWs in UAE cautioned on taking out loans, issuing bouncing checks

The Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday warned overseas Filipino workers in the United Arab Emirates against availing loans through their credit cards that they can't afford to pay.

The advisory was issued following the "alarming" increase in the number of Filipinos detained there due to unpaid loans.

According to the DFA, many OFWs are tempted to apply for loans in the UAE due to low interest rates.

"They (OFWs) are lured by low interest rates, without paying much attention to the other charges which appear in the fine print, and the prospect of taking as much as 18 months of one’s salary," the DFA said.
