Dubai Police Hails Starbucks Employee for Honesty for Returning Customer's Bag Full of Cash

A Starbucks employee is being hailed as a “true example of honesty” after she returned a customer’s bag containing cheques and a huge amount of cash.

Mae Anne Olmidillo from Philippines, who works as a branch manager at the Starbucks outlet in Dubai Mall, was honored by the Dubai police in presence of her coworkers on August 29.

While others would join singing contests to win prizes or start a career, Mark Rodel Sularte Arellano joined one for a different reason — to boost his self-confidence.

After surviving his first karaoke contest in 2010, it was all a walk in the park for the 34-year-old sales associate.

“After that first competition, dun na nag-start yung desire [ko] na kumanta sa stage at sumali sa mga contest kasi parang from there, parang bumalik yung tiwala ko sa sarili na puwede rin pala ako manalo ulit,” Mark shared an email, referring to the karaoke contest at the Rockwell Bar in Capitol Hotel-Al Mina, Dubai.

THE HAGUE — A young Filipino who lived off a rubbish dump and slept in an open tomb has won a prestigious children’s award in the Netherlands for his work to improve the rights of his fellow street kids.

Cris “Kesz” Valdez, aged 13, was handed this year’s International Children’s Peace Prize at a glittering ceremony in The Hague last Wednesday, where he received a 100,000 euro ($130,000) prize.

Valdez was chosen from three finalists for the work of his “Championing Community Children” charity which raises funds to hand out gift parcels to needy children in Cavite City, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of the capital Manila. 

Three Pinoys in UAE cited in Asian book of achievers

Three Filipinos who are making a name for themselves in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were featured in a book highlighting the contribution of young Asian expatriates in the Arab country, the news site “Emirates 24/7” said on Wednesday.

Titled “Young Asian Achievers,” the 165-page coffee table book, authored by UAE-based journalist Meraj Rizvi, features “the success stories of 25 expatriates from eight Asian countries” who have made a mark in various fields like business, fashion, and journalism.

During the launch last December 12, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair said the featured achievers’ “growth is synonymous with the rise of the city which is today a global destination for business and commerce.”

Fil-Am midwife is named CNN Hero of the Year

Robin Lim, a Filipino-American midwife who helps poor women have healthy pregnancies and births in Indonesia, has been named 2011 CNN Hero of the Year.

In Sunday's star-studded ceremony at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Lim received the CNN Hero of the Year 2011 award from Anderson Cooper.

"Today on our Earth, 981 mothers in the prime of their life will die -- and tomorrow again and yesterday. And I'm asking you to help change that. We don't even know how many babies are lost, but all of us can help change that," a tearful Lim said, as she accepted the honor.

Lim, who was born to an American soldier and a Filipino mother, decided to become a midwife after her younger sister died from pregnancy complications a few years ago.

She and her husband sold their house in Hawaii, and moved to Bali, Indonesia to "reinvent" their lives.

In Indonesia, Lim noted pregnant women are 300 times more likely to die in the next 12 months than women who are not pregnant.
