Remains of Pinay domestic helper still in UAE after dying two months ago

The family of 42-year-old domestic helper Maria Nila Ramirez is seeking the help of the Philippine government after she died in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 9.

In an interview with GMA News Online on Monday,Janet Bilarmino Pabilan, Ramirez's sister, said their family has been coordinating with different government agencies for the past two months to bring the remains back in the Philippines.

"Ang sabi sa amin, maghintay lang kaso inabot na ng 2 months," she said. "Natakot kami, baka ilibing na siya dun."

Gangco Punguinaguina, Assistant to the National Officer assigned to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, said the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is already doing the necessary steps to facilitate the repatriation of Ramirez's body.

"They don't have to worry. The body can't be buried without the clearance of the embassy," he explained.

"Last May 9, we've already instructed our consulate to Dubai about the incident requesting their assistance in repatriation," Punguinaguina said.

"We are still waiting for their reply. I think the embassy has still doubts on the cause of death," he ended.
