The Philippines' Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is now officially among the world's new 7 wonders of nature (N7WN) based on the results of a global poll, Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn announced in a press briefing at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City on Saturday.
Hagedorn said the inclusion of the 17-kilometer underground river “will boost not only tourism traffic in Puerto Princesa but also heighten the awareness on the need to protect the natural wonder.”
N7WN president Bernard Weber, who confirmed the triumph, was himself captivated by the PPUR in his visit to Palawan several months ago.
Weber lauded the efforts of Hagedorn to maintain and protect the river’s pristine beauty.
Hagedorn, meanwhile, thanked President Benigno Aquino III for supporting the PPUR as well as the millions of people, led by Puerto Princesa residents, who campaigned globally to ensure that the environmental wonder would land a spot on the prestigious list.
Government officials will lead a recognition ceremony on Monday to officially declare PPUR as one of the new 7 wonders of nature.
Also in the N7WN list are the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazo Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and Table Mountain.
