Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last Tuesday (September 10) in an effort to strengthen trade and economic relations between the two countries.
In a meeting with UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan, del Rosario discussed the current relationship between the two countries and shared views on various important regional issues and agreements on regular high-level visits.
Del Rosario highlighted the impact of the entry of Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific in the UAE, which paved the way for better trade relations and understanding between the two cultures.
He also expressed the Philippine government's appreciation for the initiatives that the UAE government has done to improve the conditions of the overseas Filipino workers.
The two also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Political Consultations between the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE.
The agreement aims to ensure regular consultations between the two countries.
A Visa Waiver Agreement for Holders of Diplomatic and Official/Special Passports has also been agreed on by the two sides to further encourage visits from diplomats and other government officials.
The two also agreed on a MOU on creating a Joint Committee for Cooperation, which will coordinate economic, commercial, cultural, judicial, security and various other programs between the Philippines and the UAE.
Rosario was accompanied by his wife Gretchen del Rosario who visited the Ewa'a Shelter for Women and Children in an effort to promote her advocacy against human trafficking and sexual abuse.
