Foiled smuggle try delays arrival of balikbayan boxes from UAE — report

A foiled attempt to smuggle tires and wheel rims into the Philippines has been delaying the delivery of balikbayan boxes to the families of overseas Filipino workers in the United Arab Emirates.

Grace Express, a Dubai-based cargo firm involved in the mess, said the items being smuggled were in a 40-foot container that also held the other balikbayan boxes, according to a report on Gulf News.

"An electronic scanner flagged down a 40-foot container carrying the rims and tires. It was part of 224 boxes in that container, so the entire shipment was delayed, resulting in penalties," the report quoted the company's manager Fernando Santos as saying.

He apologized to customers, saying this caused a massive backlog that led to financial losses for his firm.

Santos said he is trying to sell his personal property to clear the remaining penalties.

But many of the company's customers affected by the interception lodged complaints against the company before the Philippine Shippers Bureau and the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai.

Some said their boxes were sent as early as April but have yet to be delivered, while others who sent their boxes last February learned their items were delivered only in June.
