In UAE, drugs found in mobile phones, neckties, and other unexpected places

Illegal drugs. In the United Arab Emirates, they were found in neckties, mobile phones, post cards, money purses, cigarette packets, underwear, shoes, newspapers, stomach, sensitive parts of the body, and other unexpected places.

A report of the news site Emirates 24/7 on Friday said resorting to new techniques helped Dubai customs authorities find illegal drugs in items such as cellphones, purses, and more.

Customs authorities have thus made much more drug seizures -- 104 -- in the first quarter of 2012 compared to only 45 in the same period last year.

The narcotics seized included hashish, heroin, cocaine, opium, tramadol, crystal and other drugs.

The Albayan newspaper quoted Ahmed Butti Ahmed, CEO of Dubai’s Ports and Free Zone Authority, as saying: “Drug dealers now have second thoughts before bringing in their poisons whether to market them in Dubai or target other markets…yet, that does not means that we have reached 100 per cent protection….more efforts and work need to be done.
