Two Emirati women launched an online campaign for modesty in dressing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), saying they were "disgusted" when they saw women wearing short skirts that barely concealed their undergarments.
According to a report of the news site Gulf News, Hanan Al Rayes (@noonworld) and Asma Al Muhairi (@simplyAsma) started the campaign last month.
Through their online campaign, they hope to educate women on the proper way to dress, especially in public places like malls.
They said they were shocked to see women in revealing clothes at the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi and The Dubai Mall.
“There were women who had come straight from the beach covered with nothing more than a sarong. I also saw women with really short skirts that didn’t fully conceal their undergarments. It was disgusting,” Gulf News quoted Hanan, who works in administration in Al Ain.
Hanan said the summer season is no excuse to wear "disrespectful clothing."
Prominent UAE personalities have joined the call to people to dress modestly after the issue became a trending topic on the social networking site Twitter, the report added.
Emirati personalities including activist Jalal Bin Thaneya (@Binthaneya) and current affairs commentator Mishaal Al Gergawi (@algergawi) supported the campaign with the hashtag (#UAEDressCode).
Asma, a marketing professional in Abu Dhabi, lamented improper dressing is a typical sight at malls, and sometimes encourages lecherous stares. “It is shameful, especially for families with kids,” she said.
Their friend, Laila (@lilCat84), an Emirati who works for the government, has been actively supporting the campaign.
Nasif Kayed, general manager at the Shaikh Mohammad Center for Cultural Understanding, said he chooses age-appropriate movies for his children.
However, when his family visits the mall, Kayed said he cannot control what the children are exposed to.
“Why do women wear immodest clothes in a public space like a mall? I hope expatriates realize that we are a country that promotes tolerance and respect. Women should dress appropriately and modestly,” the official said.
