Pinoys in UAE join 'Walk for Health'

Some 300 Filipinos in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday took part in an annual walk to promote good health and raise awareness on lifestyle choices.

The Filipino expatriates participated in a dance exercise before the "Walk For Your Health" at Safa Park, according to a report of Gulf News on Saturday.

The organizers said this was the biggest attendance of Filipino organizations in Dubai so far, the report said.

"The concept of the event which is held every last Friday of March at Safa Park is to gather all Filipinos and promote healthy living," Walk For Your Health founder Art Los Baños said.

Los Baños said they conducted blood pressure and pulse rate readings before allowing participants to walk around the 3.4-kilometer jogging track.

Friday's activity included a lecture on the importance of mental health. Hypertension had been discussed in 2007.

Lectures in past years included diabetes in 2008 and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in 2009, busting medical myths in 2010 and proper stretching in 2011.

Philippine Consul General Benito Valeriano, who joined the morning program, lauded the Filipino community for the initiative.
