Filipinas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were urged to attend on Friday a "Day of Sisterhood" where they would learn skills from money matters to self-defense.
The free event is part of the advocacy for Filipina empowerment by "Illustrado" Magazine, according to a report on Gulf News.
"We wanted to expand our campaign to reach the grassroots level and make it more educational for Filipinas because we feel the need to have a dialogue with them. We know about their issues, but it's not only about the problems that you hear about Filipinas in the press in terms of sexual harassment, getting pregnant and such," said Lalaine Chu-Benitez, the magazine's publisher and editor-in-chief.
"We also know about their problems when it comes to managing their finances. So we feel that we can add value by bringing all these experts together and holding a free educational event that they can benefit from," she added.
Friday's event is expected to bring together experts from various fields to engage the community in an open discussion of women's issues, the Gulf News report said.
One of the speakers, psychologist Dr. Margie Holmes, will talk about love for self, self-image, reproductive health and relationship issues.
Mary Jane Alvero Al Mahdi will speak about how to grow in one's career, what recruiters look for, and other job-related topics.
Dubai-based personal finance consultant Bey Celso will talk about personal finance.
Workshops on personal grooming, style and image will also be held.
There will also be a demonstration on self-defense for women courtesy of Ebrahim Beltran.
The event's organizers said they hope to reach and empower more Filipinas with the event.
"We are opening our doors to Filipinas from all walks of life. It doesn't matter if they're professionals or house help or whatever. It is for free and it's a casual event, they can come as they are. We're serving snacks throughout the day. All they need to do is be present," Chu-Benitez said.
She added shuttle buses will be provided at an assigned place in Karama.
