As noise pollution is fast becoming a serious social issue in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), authorities have set a daily deadline for loud noises: 8:00 p.m., a report of the news site Emirates 24/7 said.
Loud noises are permitted only between:
* 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on working days, and
* between 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
The report said "making excess noise after 8:00 p.m. on a working day or after 7:00 p.m. on weekends of public holidays could land you in serious trouble."
Noise pollution is the “excessive, upsetting human, animal or machine-created environmental noise that disrupts the activity, balance or harmony of normal life," the report added.
In the UAE, Emirates 24/7 said the most common sources of noise pollution are:
* road traffic,
* construction sites,
* construction equipment,
* airplanes,
* loud music and televisions,
* garbage trucks,
* machinery, and
* generators.
Citing a report of the "999 Magazine," the official English monthly of UAE's Ministry of Interior, Emirates 24/7 said it was best to try to settle first the issue of noise pollution "in a friendly and non-aggressive way."
However, if that fails, aggrieved residents may report their noisy neighbors to the Abu Dhabi Municipality on 02-678-8888. "If a situation turns adverse, you can call the police authorities,” the report said.
On the "999 Magazine," Lt. Colonel Awadh Saleh Al Kindi, Editor-in-Chief, said: "More than 200 different nationalities co-exist peacefully in the UAE and to maintain this, it is essential for residents to be considerate towards their neighbours and avoid unnecessarily loud noise that is unhealthy for themselves as well as the community.”
Citing World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, Emirates 24/7 said for a good sleep, nighttime sound levels should not exceed:
* 30 decibels for continuous background noise, or
* 45 decibels for individual noise events.
Some construction sites produce more than 70 decibels, the report said.
It added that noise pollution can cause anxiety, sleep deprivation, frustration, and anger.
According to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), the UAE is the fourth top destination of Filipinos, with 636,154 Filipinos residing in that country as of 2010.
