Al Ain, United Arab Emirates— More and more Filipina mothers are choosing to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), an official of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) noted.
Chief officer-in-charge Nerissa Jimena of the Network Management Division of POEA disclosed in an email to GMA News Online that there are currently around 13,518 married Filipinas in the UAE.
The figure has more than doubled since 2007 when there were only 6,176 Filipino mothers in UAE.
Jimena said there are also currently 961 Filipino single mothers in the UAE and 518 widows.
Five years ago, there were only 409 Filipino single mothers in the UAE and 210 widows, she said.
‘Working abroad is not always worth it’
Daisy Moreno Vera, 34, front desk executive of the NMC Healthcare Hospital, started working overseas when her youngest son, Emman Yuichie, was just seven months old.
“I didn’t hear his first word saying mama or dada. I didn’t know what he wanted when he was two or three years old. He also didn’t know at once that I was his mother,” she said in an email.
However, Vera had to help her husband with finances because they have two other boys, Josef Constantine, 13, and Jeff Yugie, 7.
“Masakit at malungkot [kapag pinapauwi nila ako] kasi alam ko at ramdam ko na pag sinasabi nila yun, sobrang miss na nila ako at kailangan nila ng comfort ng isang nanay. Pero gustuhin ko man umuwi, may mga bagay tayong kailangan na i-consider practically," Vera said.
She looks forward to her annual vacation to be with her family.
“Ten years lang ako mag-aabroad—I still have four years to finish. Matapos ko lang yung pinapagawa naming bahay ay uuwi na ako. Gusto ko kasi pag nagbibinata na sila, isa man lang sa amin ng asawa ko ang mapagtatanungan nila about their lives," she said.
Single parent with five children
Meanwhile, Janice Jasmine Lazaro Yaco, 35, document controller, has two children who will graduate this year: Jan Marie Therese, 12, from elementary and Ronice Michael, 6, from preparatory.
She has three other children: Niña, 13; Rojan, 7; and Gelo, 5.
“I really didn’t have plans to work abroad. Kaso, nung magkaproblema, I had no other option. My ex-husband left us and wala naman binibigay na suporta,” she said in an email.
“Kaso ano namang buhay ang mabibigay ko sa kanila pag umuwi ako? Sa mahal ng edukasyon sa atin ngayon, malabo siguro," Yaco said.
