Rent contract now required in Dubai for visit visa seekers

The government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said those applying for a visit visa to Dubai are now required to present a rent contract along with a Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) bill.

According to a report of the news site Emirates 24/7, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (DNRD) of Dubai stated in an email: “Please be informed that as per the new rules implemented recently, the tenancy contract and last DEWA bill is mandatory for visit visa.

In another report, Emirates 24/7 quoted a DNRD call center Executive as saying: “It is 'mandatory' to provide an attested tenancy contract even if one was applying for a visit visa. It’s a new rule. You have to provide us with a tenancy contract.

It should be attested by the Land Department if you are staying in Dubai, or from the respective municipality if you are staying in any other emirate. We just need the contract and we are not looking at the size of the apartment,” the executive explained.

Not required

While the tenancy contract is already required in Dubai, it is not yet mandatory in Abu Dhabi. Another call center executive from Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center told Emirates 24/7: “For now, you don’t require to produce an attested tenancy contract.

The news site earlier reported that the issue about tenancy contract is still causing some confusion among those applying for a visit visa.

Mahesh D, who applied for a visit visa at DNRD’s Jebel Ali branch on June 14, said: “On the phone they informed me to bring an attested copy of my tenancy contract, but at the immigration office I was never asked for one.

Mina Saheel a worker in Dubai also applied for a visit visa.

I went to apply for a visa for my parents and I got it immediately. No official asked me for my tenancy contract,” she told Emirates 24/7.

On June 17, Al Khaleej, an Arabic daily news publication quoted Major General Nassir Al Minhali, the Ministry’s Assistant Undersecretary for Naturalisation and Residency stating information about the new rules.

Al Minhali said that Abu Dhabi along with other emirates will be implementing the rules stipulating expatriates to submit tenancy contract with their application for renewal of their residence visas.

He also said that expat bachelors who live and work in different emirates must present documents that verify their residence together with their visa renewal application.

The decision, which was temporarily suspended last week, was a “security, service and administrative” regulation in line with UAE’s interests said Al Minhali.

The UAE is the second top destination of OFWs, based on data from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO).

The UAE also has an estimated Filipino population of 636,154 according to the 2010 data of the CFO.
