Pinoy in UAE recycles aluminum cans to send PHL kids to school

A Filipino in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) raises funds by recycling aluminum cans to send children in the Philippines to school.

A report of the news site Gulf News on Friday said after work, Michael Del Moro Manlogon collects around 300 aluminum cans a day from a food court near his workplace.

He then flattens the cans with his feet and sells them to a city scrap dealer who pays him Dh4 (P46.55) per kilo.

In a day, Manlogon, who works for the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, gets around Dh20 (P232.76) for the aluminum cans that the food court janitors help him collect.

In 2011, Manlogon raised enough funds to send two 12-year-old children to school and give 150 bags of school supplies for schoolchildren in his hometown of Perez in Quezon province.

He told Gulf News: "One of the greatest moments in my life is when I hand over the packet to a child. Seeing the smiles on his or her face makes all my efforts worthwhile."

He and his wife Noemi, first started thinking of how they could help children in the Philippines after seeing on TV the devastating effects of tropical cyclones "Ondoy" (Ketsana) and "Pepeng" (Parma) in 2010.

He told Gulf News that he was deeply affected by the destruction he saw and felt that he needed to do something to help.

Manlogon, who has three children from ages three to eight, recalled how children in his hometown, where most people earn a living from farming or fishing, badly needed school supplies.

He said he intends to keep pursuing his personal fund raising project.

One of his plans is to collect aluminum cans by driving around with a van with a banner that says "Recycle for a Cause."

He told Gulf News that more cans mean more money and more gift packets, and "maybe even a computer" for the school.
