Deadline extended for expats obtaining UAE nat'l ID

The deadlines set in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for expatriates to obtain their UAE national identification cards have been extended, the news site Gulf News said.

According to a Gulf News report on Wednesday, the following are the deadlines set for expats for registering for or renewing their national IDs :

- Sharjah: Jan. 31;
- Abu Dhabi: March 31, and
- Dubai: May 31.

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) said there were about 600,000 Filipinos in the UAE as of December 2009.

After the original deadline lapsed on Oct. 31 last year, expatriates had to pay a Dh20 fine per day. The maximum fine was Dh1,000.

However, a spokesperson for the Emirates Identity Authority (Emirates ID) said the agency has extended the deadline for expatriates in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

The spokesperson explained that no fines were collected after the October 31 deadline from those who renewed their cards in these emirates.

October 31 was also the deadline for all Emiratis to register or renew their ID cards.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said expats in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, whose residence visa expires in 2012, do not have to rush in getting an ID card.

However, they have to take the card with them when they renew their visas this year.

Deadline not extended in other emirates

Meanwhile, the Gulf News report said the deadline for expatriates in four other emirates — Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah — was not extended.

The spokesman explained that the expatriates "were not given any reprieve because their deadline had ended long back."
