3,000 Govt. Employees in Dubai to Observe 'Car Free Day' Jan. 18

Some 3,000 employees from 13 government departments in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will not use their cars on January 18 for "Car Free Day," a program to save the environment

A report of Gulf News said the move would save the environment from at least 10 tonnes of carbon emissions. The quantity of emissions from means of transportation reached 62,295 tons in 2010, representing 47 percent of the total air pollutants in the UAE, the report said.

Engr Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General, Dubai Municipality told Gulf News: "The idea is to encourage people to use mass transport like the Metro and buses. Dubai has all the facilities of international standards which makes it easy to participate. We will continue our participation every year. The aim is to have at least one day in the city without cars. We will achieve it with cooperation from the people."

The yearly program, launched in 2010, is being participated in by 13 government departments: the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Dubai Land Department, Etisalat, Ministry of Environment and Water, Dubai Police, Dubai Properties Group, Ministry of Public Works, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Ministry of Education, Civil Defence, Dubai World Trade Centre, Department of Economic Development, and Al Bayan.

According to the Commission on Overseas Filipinos, there are about 600,000 Filipinos in UAE.
