POEA to deploy more male OFWs in 2012

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said it plans to deploy more male workers overseas, citing the women workers’ vulnerability to abuse.

In an interview with GMA News’ Sherrie Ann Torres, POEA chief Carlos Cao Jr. said the agency wants to turn back the trend of sending female workers abroad to lessen cases of abuse and the “social cost” of labor migration.

We believe the social cost of labor migration can be more substantially diminished if there are more male OFWs – more fathers landing jobs overseas – than women,” he said.

Last January, Cao, who was just appointed, also said that he wished to see “less and less of our women OFWs deployed as household service workers.”

“I wish to see that mothers should stay in the country to take care of their brood and not to rock the cradle of different nationalities,” he said.

The POEA’s statistics on "new hires" showed that more than 185, 000 women – or more than half of the total over 341,000 – were deployed in 2010.

Around 135, 000 of the said women OFWS fell under the “Service Workers” category, which included domestic workers and caregivers.

Demand to continue

With an estimated 1.5 million OFWs deployed so far this year, Cao remains optimistic that the demand for Filipino workers will continue until 2012.

Next year, Australia, Guam, and New Zealand are planning to take highly skilled OFWs like construction workers, while Japan and Europe will be open to more caregivers, he said.

The POEA head added that professionals like engineers, semi-skilled, and non-skilled workers will still be in demand next year.
